No, A Book Will Not Make You Rich…
But it has other benefits that are worthwhile in the long term!
Introduction
Unfortunately, there are a lot of articles that keep saying why you should NOT write a book. Probably this is due to the fact that many other articles think you should write a book because it brings a lot of money.
Neither one nor the other is right….
Should You Write A Book?
It depends…
Also, maybe only those who really want to do it should write a book, while the others, just shouldn’t. If you don’t want to write a book, then just don’t do it — whether it makes money or not is not relevant. Would you really put yourself through that work just to make money? That’s absurd.
However, if you’ve always wanted to write a book, then the money shouldn’t matter either. It doesn’t matter how much money you make selling a book and whether you can live off it. Is it a waste of time if you enjoyed doing it? Just do it!
Money should not be the focus…
Do you ask yourself the same question about other hobbies? Because at the end of the day, that’s what it is: a hobby. You do hobbies because they are fun and somehow also because they are a challenge. But money should never be the focus.
The Benefits of Writing A Book
Introduction
A book may not make you a lot of money per se — but that’s not the point:
I have outlined a bunch of advantages for business owners here. If you, as a business owner, want to write a book, it could make sense in many ways–even though you might not earn a lot of money per sale.
There are many other benefits, but you have to experience them yourself. It’s like me telling you what happens when you read 100 books or when you learn how quantum physics works.
These benefits are just my personal and subjective perception of benefits that make sense to me and my life. These do not necessarily apply to your life. Nevertheless many people learn many things although it does not bring them much money. Maybe because it is exciting for them.
It’s not the money…
I know that “value” in this capitalist society is very often measured in money, but money isn’t everything — only for those who don’t have any. Probably because they are too busy to make some more money…
If you are only concerned about money, buy something cheap and sell it more expensive. Either products from China or some shitcoin. These are things that make money. Is that something that brings joy? No, but it makes money.
You can also try to become more popular on Medium to eventually — hopefully — be able to live off the affiliate program income. Write some non-intellectual articles that are written in such a way that a person without higher education can understand them, then you’ll be more popular.
… because there is so much more!
What many writers on Medium are saying is this: Only write online and only write what makes you money… With this attitude, scientific texts would not exist. There would be no scientists who find out new things, because everyone only strives to be popular and to do what makes them a lot of money.
But you don’t become a scientist primarily because you want a lot of money, and you don’t write a book because of the money. You do it because you are fascinated about the topic and you want to learn more and understand the world around you. Writing a non-fiction book can help you with that.
Some of the benefits include…
- RESEARCH: You have to do a lot of research. Truly, if you want to write a book about a subject, you have to learn a lot. So writing a book is a great motivation to read a lot about a topic. So if you’d like to read more, set yourself a book project and start researching.
- COHERENCE: You have to find out a lot and put it all into a format that makes sense in the end. Your ability to write in a way that makes sense will help you to communicate better in the long run. It’s also a great way to better organize your thoughts in the future. So if you keep facing the challenge of your head bursting, this will help you to focus.
- TAKING NOTES: You have to take notes and connect them coherently. Note taking is a big topic on Medium.com. But those notes also need to be put into a meaningful form. In the end, it’s not just a collection of notes but a coherent body of work. It shows that you’ve managed to reorganize the chaos of information.
- LEARNING: You’re writing for an audience that hasn’t dealt with the topic before, and you have to communicate it more easily accordingly. That’s how the Feynman Technique works, and you’ll learn a lot more in the process, too.
Conclusion
In the end, you’re probably not any smarter after reading this post than you were before… Should you write a book or should you not write a book?
It depends: Are the benefits strong enough to outweigh the challenge of writing a book? For some people like me, they are, for others they don’t. You should just decide that for yourself.
But if you’ve always wanted to write a book, don’t let demotivating articles stop you. Start writing!
