What Should I Read?
How to Choose the Next Book to Read…
If you have a lot of unread books, like I do, it may be hard to tell which books to read next…
Why do you read?
If it’s mostly for entertainment, just choose a book that interests you the most and stick with it. To understand my choices, you need to understand why I am reading.
Why I am reading
Everything I read has a purpose, and that purpose is output. So I start by planning a book project (What do I want to write about?) and then I choose research material accordingly. I read to write.
I love writing books. Find out why here.
There is no other reason for me to read other than the next book project, and there always is a next book project. Except, in some cases, I enjoy reading complex vocabulary.
This is why I am reading books about Math by Dover Publications. Check out their Math section below. You can buy the books on Amazon too.
This is why I also like reading Slavoj Zizek (in English).
Slavoj Zizek is a philosopher, cultural theorist and public intellectual.
I also enjoy reading Edmund Husserl (in German). The linguistic brilliance that runs through his works is incredibly inspiring for me.
Edmund Husserl was a philosopher and mathematician who established the school of phenomenology.
Please don’t think of me as sitting at my books with a grin on my face. I am absolutely relaxed but I am enthusiastic. The linguistic presentation of the conceptual notions captivates me and I feel a sense of well-being while reading these books.
1.Each time I finish a book with more knowledge and a clear mind. It’s the aftermath that matters. I feel better afterwards. I don’t read these books because I want to get somewhere. It’s not that my goal is to improve my qualifications by learning new skills. Instead, it shapes my thinking, my mind, thought, and overall living.
2.Reading these books puts me in a state similar to flow. Maximum concentration, dealing with a task that is just a little harder than enough, so that it does not allow you to digress. Too easy and I quickly lose interest or just quit. Too hard and I don’t see the connections.
I do it because it’s fun.
It’s never ending homework but without the commitment.
My homework never stops.
There is always something to do.
And this is where the spirit of the universal genius comes into play:
- The multi-talented universal mind has many interests and engages in productive procrastination. This means he jumps from one interest to the next. Not because one is easier than the other, but because he is interested in so many topics.
This also has nothing to do with the task itself being too easy. It is just that after an hour he is no longer particularly interested in continuing it in the same way.
This has another very positive side effect: Studies show that studying for about 20 minutes is most beneficial for long term memory. Learning in small bits actually increases our learning results.
Find your reason why you read
If you are not writing books then you first need to have a WHY so you can know why you are reading books in the first place.
Choose your books accordingly:
- Do you want to learn languages to get a better job?
- Do you want to learn new skills?
- Do you want to acquire more knowledge to be better at socializing?
- etc.
We can read a book in many ways
We can read for information, facts, content, for language, wording, vocabulary, or to enjoy the layout or the structure of it. You need to find out your “why” first and then choosing the right books will be much easier.
Starting with the book that has the fewest pages will keep you motivated to move on to bigger books on your shelves.
I am mostly reading non-fiction. If you want to read fiction, it might not matter what book you choose: Choose the book that interests you the most.
What does “reading to write” mean?
A book that does not inspire me to write my own book is not the book I want to read. But I do not read with the intention to get something out of it.
Inspiration will happen eventually.
I want to get the distraction of the need for inspiration out of the way. Every kind of art I consume must either inspire or motivate to create better art.
Note: If you are ever in a writer’s block again, read what you’ve already published. The more content you have published, the more you can draw inspiration from.
Think about it
You have read a book that challenged you’re thinking about a certain topic?
It might inspire you to include these new insights into your next work.
You’ve read something you disagree with?
This might motivate you to create something better.
Know why you read
When reading, know your why. If you do not know the outcome, you won‘t see the connections. If you do not see the connections, the book won‘t make any sense.
