This Is Why You Learned Nothing Today
Why reading on medium won’t help you to learn more
Introduction
If you are like most readers on Medium, you will go from one article to the next in one sitting. You read several articles, do not take any notes at all and after an exhausting hour you remember … Nothing.
If you want to learn something new you have to deal with stuff that isn’t obviously easy to grasp.
You would have to focus on the complex:
Why you learned nothing…
So you could have focused on something meaningful, studying math or science in general, but you did not. Instead, you lurked around Medium to go from one article to the another… So here are the reasons:
- You do not have a goal when reading.
- You do not take notes.
- You are easily distracted.
Is there a way to go against this?
This is what you could do instead:
- Go away from medium.com
- Read a book.
- Invest more time in reading.
- Do not move from one article to the next.
- If you feel your focus is going somewhere else, stop!
How ironic to read an article on medium on how to not read an article on medium! You are still here reading this, trying to figure out if there is something else that you could learn. But there is nothing else, so you move on to the next article.
And this is wrong!
Get away from the habit of clicking through medium to find at least something interesting to read. When do you know when you are done? What is your goal? You claim to read non-fiction to learn something, but if you do not remember much, did you really learn?
Go and read a book!
