Charge premiums!
Introduction
It’s over, you cannot compete with the regular folks who are selling their stories for $ 0,99 — it’s impossible to compete at this price. And $ 9 for a kindle book? Nobody is going to pay for that.
The book is too expensive.
You wanted to sell it for $15 and people won’t buy it because they think this is too much for a book. As one Medium writer once wrote:

The reason?
It’s too expensive.
Create art instead
Do you know when people do not care about the price? Do you know a market where people even pay millions to get something? It’s the art market.
They pay a premium to get your „thing“ (whatever it is) as long as they see it as art. This is why you should create your book as an artwork instead of a regular book.
Then charge a premium for it.
Examples…
House of Leaves is a novel, but it is also a work of art.
Then do not offer a digital version, make it print only. As one user on reddit said:
