How to Get Out of Bed in the Morning?
I find something I look forward to do every day!
I had a low some time ago and I wanted to quit my job.
We all probably felt this way some day or another.
There were just too many days already when it just didn’t interest me.
Of course, I could be happy about many things, like not having to do tedious work, having a great team, and a lot more — but despite all these things, I found it hard to get up in the morning.
Feeling overwhelmed…
Where was my motivation?
My work hasn’t changed much so there was no reason to feel this way.
But the idea of doing this one thing for the rest of my life was quite overwhelming…
This feeling of sadness and frustration can stem from a variety of reasons, such as a lack of passion or interest in the chosen field, a sense of being trapped or limited in your choices, or simply feeling like you are not fulfilling your true potential.
It’s not uncommon to feel overwhelmed and unsure about committing to a career or lifestyle that you see yourself pursuing for the rest of your life.
But from one day to another, I changed something…
How I got my motivation back
It is important to understand that the situation was still the same. Nothing has changed except my perspective on work and life in general. So, truth to be told, nothing changed except I did.
With a change of mindset I found my motivation again.
You know, that motivation that has been there from day one but was gone fron one day to another without any reason? It was back again.
I delivered better work too.
Honestly, I felt limitless…
The secret, as you would have guessed, was this:
I found something I look forward to do every day!
Find your values
But before you do that, you have to have a clear understanding of what you want to do in your life. Start by figuring out what is important to you and what you want to achieve. This is harder than it sounds.
Having a clear understanding of your values and goals can help provide direction and purpose.
When you do not look forward to do the work during the day, find something to look forward to do in the evening. Maybe it is reading a book, creating a website, solving puzzles, … or just playing.
It’s important to remember that you are in control of your life and have the power to make changes if you feel unfulfilled.
If you find ONE thing that you look forward to, even if it is not work related, you are in a better mindset, will deliver better work, and will have more fun doing it too!
Examples of what I look forward to
It’s good to have a list at hand to remember yourself of what you look forward to do at the end of the day. Focus on today. Do not try to do the most productive thing or the most valuable thing — as long as it is the most fun thing to do for you.
- Reading a book
- Writing my own book
- Building my website
- Writing an article for Medium
- Playing games
- Learning Math and Physics
- Studying Chinese
- …
What should you do today?
There is enough to do. The question is not:
“Which of these should I do?”
but rather
“What am I most looking forward to?”
— DO THAT!
It is important to look forward to it.
It is the anticipation that shows us how important it is to us.
It is also a good way to enjoy the anticipation.
We don’t need the “thing” (whatever it is) to enjoy anticipation.
The longer you can prolong gratification, the longer you will feel anticipation.
Sometimes, only having the imagination is enough to make you motivated for an entire day.
