Get More Ideas — By Writing More!
The only way to get more ideas is to get going.
When I first began my journey as a writer,
I struggled to come up with ideas for my books and articles.
Introduction
I wanted to publish at least one book a year.
But I found it difficult to consistently generate content.
In fact, I only started writing consistently in 2020.
Before the time, I was waiting for inspiration to strike.
But it would not happen.
This was a major mistake, as I soon learned that relying on motivation or inspiration alone would not help me make progress in my writing.
The Writing System
To overcome this challenge, I realized that I needed to establish a system for myself. I decided to designate a specific time each morning for writing, regardless of whether or not I had a specific topic in mind.
This was difficult at first, as I was used to only writing when I felt inspired. But I became accustomed to freewriting.
To my surprise, I was able to easily produce content with 500 words on a variety of topics — every day. I was never focusing on a single topic and it did not occur to me that I should do see.
The best part of freewriting was that I didn’t feel the pressure to publish everything I wrote. But I still published everything. In fact, through publishing consistently, the pressure decreased. It did not matter so much anymore if I made a mistake.
Lessons Learned
Through this process, I learned a few important lessons.
- The more you write, the more ideas you’ll have.
- You shouldn’t wait for inspiration — just take action.
It’s normal to struggle to find inspiration and to produce good work when you first start taking action. However, it’s important to remember that no one can create great work every single day.
It’s okay to create some bad work as you work towards becoming good at it.
A large amount of work, a significant portion of your results will come from just a small portion of that work. That means, only this small portion will be really really good.
Write for Yourself
Your goal should be to practice your craft and become so skilled at it that writing feels natural. Exercise your writing muscles regularly, and don’t wait for inspiration.
Take action, and you will eventually find the motivation and inspiration to keep going.
Start Writing — Never Stop
So, if you’re struggling to find ideas for your writing or feeling uninspired, try this: start writing. Think about the first thing that comes to mind and write about it.
Often, the only thing holding us back from writing is the fear of publishing it and having others read it.
Remember to publish everything you write. This way you will take away the fear of publishing. You will see that nobody really cares about your mistakes at all.
