What is constant…?

Introduction

The only constant is change.

In the terms of change, a predominant notion holds, that is, the fear of change.

We have to differentiate between change that happens from within — because of intrinsic motivation — and change that is forced because of external factors. I personally believe that change is relevant in every concern of our live, and so I am almost constantly changing the way I live, work, or spend my time.

This is a constant philosophy.

This way, I am more relaxed and feeling happier overall.

What would I do differently today?

I wouldn’t do anything differently today — as everything I did got me the job that I now have and that I am happy with.

Everything is good as it is.

I should have probably started earlier with this change, but then again, this might not have given me this job that I am doing right now.

Key Learnings

Very important for me was the Roadmap for Change that gives a detailed outline on the process of the management of change.

Coming from an entrepreneurial background, I usually change as fast as possible and then revaluate the results. The common saying goes like this: An entrepreneur jumps off a cliff and builds a parachute on the way down.

However, in regards to the new job that I am now working on, changing is not that easy, involves a lot of people, needs to be planned, evaluated, and measured.

This approach is completely new to me as I personally think that thinking too much about something will never get it done. Too much planning leads to analysis paralysis.

This Roadmap for Change is a great way to asses the whole concept of change in a different perspective and to make it clear to others, why this change is needed.

It also gives them a better gut feeling, as everything is already laid out for them, planned in the greatest detail possible, communicating everything that is important for them.

My personal takeaways for my professional career

One key takeaway was the case discussion/study of Rakuten and their goal of Englishnization — which failed at first.

I study languages myself, because I enjoy doing so, and this is why I can personally relate with the CEO and his motivation to study another language.

He had his own motivation to go out and pay for language courses. He then thought people would do the same, being motivated (by force) to buy books and audio courses.

The result wasn’t as expected and only a few people tried to teach themselves.

This further leads me to the paradox of self-help. If self-help was a thing, people would not need a coach or a trainer to help them. Books in the self-help niche would not have a market. What appeals to people though, is the idea of self-help and self-motivation, not the application. This further makes me ask this question:

Is intrinsic motivation even real?

The characteristic theme of this article, further shows the capitalist theory of management of people as resources.

They cannot manage themselves, which is why they need other people to manage them. This further leads the way to even more exploitation by capitalistic managers.

The fatal flaw lies in the conceptual notion that people would be motivated enough to help themselves in order to stay at their job.

However, the opposite was the case.

Does that not tell us more about the nature of the people who work for this company?

When they aren’t intrinsically motivated to improve their skills constantly, therefore buying themselves courses and teaching themselves a language, are they even motivated to work at that company?

This behavior was simply a symptom of the entitlement that runs through the subconscious dialectical notion:

Yes we want to have that, but the company should pay for it.

Does that not give us a good idea how the culture of the company is experienced?

Isn’t it enough motivation, to stay at this job, and therefore, improving yourself all the time, to stay up to date and relevant?

This is what I am missing not only in this article, but also in the general population.
